Distinguished and Famous people from Greater North Melbourne

🤝 Mary MacKillop

Mary MacKillop was born in Fitzroy in 1842, the eldest child of Scottish immigrant parents. Family financial difficulties meant that she worked from a young age. Her later teaching at Penola and partnership with Julian Tenison Woods led to the Sisters of Saint Joseph and a widening network of schools. The educational work focused on children whose circumstances limited their opportunities. Canonised in 2010, she became Australia’s first Catholic saint. Fitzroy is the beginning of that biography, preceding the South Australian schoolroom and the national organisation that developed from it.

🤝 Sir Doug and Lady Gladys Nicholls

Doug and Gladys Nicholls made Fitzroy an important base for Aboriginal religious and welfare work. Together they established the Aboriginal Church of Christ, while Doug’s community responsibilities extended far beyond services on Sunday. Families facing difficult housing and discrimination needed practical support as well as public advocacy. His football career and later appointment as governor of South Australia are better-known milestones, but the Fitzroy work reveals the sustained local labour behind them. Remembering Gladys alongside him also recognises a partnership in community service, rather than reducing the story to one prominent office-holder.
